No hot water? It is usually one of two parts

When a geyser stops heating, the fault is nearly always the element or the thermostat, and both are inexpensive. The element is the heating coil sitting in the water; the thermostat is the switch that decides when it runs. A tripped earth leakage every time the geyser cycles points at a failed element leaking to earth.

Elements fail faster in hard water because scale builds on the coil and cooks it. If the old one comes out caked, that is your answer, and the new one will go the same way unless the water is dealt with.

Match the element, not just the wattage

Plumber's Depot stock the common 3kW element, which is the standard fit for most domestic geysers. Take the old element in with you β€” thread type, length and flange pattern all vary, and a 3kW element that does not seal is a ceiling full of water.

Be honest about doing it yourself

This is not a straightforward swap. The geyser has to be isolated electrically and drained before anything comes apart, it is usually in a roof space, and geyser work in South Africa is regulated β€” a compliance certificate matters when you sell the house or claim from insurance.

Buying the part yourself and having a qualified plumber fit it is a reasonable middle road, and it is the part price above that you save.
