Two different shops, two different jobs
Build it handles the bulk end — cement, bricks and timber from foundation to roof, with delivery around Potch. If you are pricing a slab or a roof, this is a volume conversation and worth asking about a delivered price rather than a per-unit one.
EB's Hardware is the corner shop that stocks the thing the big stores do not, and where you get advice over the counter. Paint mixed to colour, keys cut, and the odd fitting that would otherwise cost you a trip to another town.
Buying cement and brick without wasting money
- Cement is perishable. A 50kg bag stored on a damp floor goes hard in weeks. Buy what you will use, keep it off the concrete on pallets or timber, and cover it.
- Order bricks in one go. Stock bricks are priced per thousand, and two separate loads can come from two different firings — visibly different colour in the same wall.
- Add for waste. Roughly 5% on brick for cuts and breakages, and always round timber up to the next full length. Coming up two metres short on a Saturday afternoon costs a whole weekend.
Paint and finishing
Paint mixed to colour cannot be returned, so take the sample and get it matched properly rather than guessing off a screen. Five litres covers roughly 35 square metres per coat on a sealed wall — less on bare plaster, which drinks the first coat.
