What 42.5N actually means

The number is the strength class — 42.5 megapascals at 28 days — and the N is a normal early-strength cement. It is the general-purpose bag for the work most people in Potch are doing: slabs, foundations, brickwork mortar and plaster. You do not need anything more exotic for a garden wall or a carport slab.

Rough quantities

• Concrete slab — about 6 to 7 bags per cubic metre at a standard mix, plus sand and stone.
• Brick mortar — roughly one bag per 100 to 150 stock bricks, depending on the joint.

Buy close to when you will pour, stack the bags off the floor on pallets or timber, and keep them covered — a slab poured with tired cement cracks and there is no fixing it afterwards.
