Mixer or ready-mix?

The rule of thumb: under about a cubic metre, hire a mixer and do it yourself. Above that, price a ready-mix delivery. Hand-mixing a slab of any size is a false economy — inconsistent mixes make weak concrete, and you will feel it in your back for a week either way.

Make the day count

You are paying per day, so have everything on site before you collect the machine: cement, sand, stone, water, wheelbarrow, shovels, and the formwork already built and braced. A mixer standing still costs the same as a mixer turning.

• Bring help. Loading, mixing and barrowing is genuinely a two or three person job. Alone, you will not finish before the first batch starts going off.
• Check the transport. A mixer needs a bakkie or trailer — confirm what fits before you drive in.
• Watch the weather. Concrete poured in full North West summer sun needs to be kept damp for days afterwards or it cracks.

Clean it out, every time

Wash the drum before the concrete sets, not after. Set concrete inside a hire drum is a chipping job with a hammer and, on most hire agreements, a charge against your deposit. Rinse it between batches and hose it properly before you load up to return it — five minutes at the tap is the cheapest part of the whole hire.
