Fitted, not just sold

Nigrini / Willard are battery specialists for cars, bakkies and leisure vehicles, and they test and fit on site. That matters more than the sticker price: a battery carried home in a boot and fitted in a driveway is a battery with no proof it was ever any good.

Have it tested before you replace it. A flat battery and a dead battery look identical from the driver's seat, and an alternator that is not charging will kill a brand-new one inside a week.

Which size do you need?

• 652 — bigger reserve, typical for bakkies, diesels and anything with a heavy starter.

Getting your money's worth

Keep the terminals clean and tight, and if the car stands for weeks at a time, drive it properly at least once a fortnight. Short trips in Potch traffic never fully replace what starting the engine takes out. Ask about the warranty terms and keep the invoice — a claim without it is a new battery.
